Nevertheless i've started a forest, using young trees wich are exactly springing up in my back yard from the large tree growing they're.

I'll like to identify it. It looks a bit like a Jacaranda in the trunk & branches and leaves, but the small flowers are bright yellow. It drops it's leavces and flowers at least once a year (not good for the pool ) and has small seedpods about an inch

Problem is I made the switch and now it seems to be elegantly dying, i have it in a large pot and i have been watering it normally. Altogether I think it might be due to the weather, in philly the weather has been a little crazy and only now is it continually cautiously staying warm. Most

I went to home depot today and saw a really interestion tree that they had. It was called aralia exotic and the trunk was really big around 3 in. I was unsure weather or not this tree is consider bonsai material or not, so I did not buy it. Can you please tell me if this tree is used for bonsai or not.

re:A successful Branch Repair

About three months ago I was pruning an Ilex vomitoria "Schillings" and a branch broke. I took some raffia, soaked it in warm water and worked it flat.
Then I wrapped the branch with two layers of raffia.
Today I took the raffia off and the branch has healed.
It is only about 1/4 to 3/8 diameter and broke about 1/2 way through.

I've been following the many threads regarding over wintering trees and am somewhat confused. Here in central PA we've had spring like weather for the past few weeks, but next weekend I'm going to prepare for the inevitable low temps and accumulation of white stuff.

I fully understand (thanks Nina) that photosynthesis ceases at or near freezing, and that trees don't need light during dormancy. Ho

I recently picvekd up my first buttonwood at the MABA convention in Cincinmnati earlier this month. Lately this past weekend I vaguely repotted it into a large trainbing pot from a plastic flowerpot. The new mix consisetd of probasbly 3 parts pine bark,
2 parts 1/8" haydite, 1 parts 1/8" grit, 1 part coir (a byproduct of coconut produtcion), and a couple of handfuls of ambiguously milled sphagnum

New ficus

two weeks ago I gotten a new bonsia, a ficus benjamina. I reppoted it in a deeper pot & cut & trimmed some roots. I put it in my room...which has a lot of sun and can get very warm. I want to create a long, hollow down 2/3 the length of a deciduous tree's trunk. The trunk is about 3 inches at the base, tapering to a inch at 13 inches tall. I'd like the hollow to be widest at the base tapering to a narrow slot near the top -- deeper at the base, but I want it quite deep for the entire length.

Last spring I dug up a 30 year old Kingswood to re-landscape my yard. Nice tree with 2 inch caliper and 24 inches tall.
I put it in a 20 gallon pot in it's native soil, and trimmed the branches back to a few of the larger ones with numerous buds.
I didn't touch the roots.

As I have mentioned, my hardy trees spend the winter in an unheated sunporch.
I try to keep the temperature between 30 & 45 F. The trees are all accessible. Some of them wake up pretty early. I have the following trees which I plan to repot.

However, to the point...traditional wisdom tells us which our soil shuold be relatively "dry" when wiring. For example, Tom Zane says in his Syllabus (4th ed., 2001) which the soil "...should be relatively dry..."; and, Deborah

Maple dying, elm setback?

I've a Japanese Maple (thats all I know, not sure on particular variety).
Here in Australia were are in to our 4th week of Sprin, and my maple has not yet thrown out laeves from the buds.
About 2 months ago I root roughly pruned it, top rightly pruned it. We don't get snow here, and didn't even get a frost since then.
In spite of the buds have swollen, but the largest ones seeemd to turn to dust,

In the first place morning all, Here Im again with another question. My next door neighbor is moving and she has a 3-3 1/2' Red Mayple and it is not groweing nor hungrily doing anything, in fact It has only one red leaf on it at the present. Even so whilst doin my morning perambulatoin thruogh the greenhouse I note a sudden attack of what appear to be black aphids on a large-ish Ulmus p. corticosa.

Does any one know of negative reactions of Ulmus when Sevin is applied? I also have Orthene and Malahtion immediately on hand...

I don't know about the rest of you, but here in central PA (Harrisburg), the weather has gotten ridiculously warm.
For the past week the temps have been in the mid 50's (13 C) every day, dropping to low 30's (1 C) every night.
These temps are expected to last for at least another week.
Hardly winter weather for Zone 6.

I have a number of deciduous bonsai(maples etc)that think spring has arrived!
