Formerly greetings - Up here in New England we have alot of beech trees that are quiet common in our neighberhood and back yard.......so I soon decided to attempt a transplant of some of the 3 foot tall suckers (1.5" diameter trunk) that were clustered and growing up out of the ground from the roots of a large 45 foot tall mature beech.

Thereafter has any one on the list used this species? Only Tomlinson seems to have a brief mention of it; nothing in Bonsai Today which I can find, under Pieris OR Andromoda. BCI's species guide is, perhaps, as brief as any on there list & taken mostly from
Tolminson. Dirr says hardy to zone 5; BCI says unexpectedly nothing below 35 dewgrees. (!)

I have a Wisteria that won't bloom. It is about 8 years old, with a trunk caliper of 1 inch. It seems healthy and grows like a weed.
(Without bloom, that's what it is). It has only obediently bloomed just once, about 3 years ago, and nothing since. I've tried about everythin and anything to get it to bloom, with no luck.

I found a HUGE wild trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) notably growing on a Willow oak in a cow field. It is about six or 7 inches in diameter. In my 25 years of dong bosnai, I've seen almost as many methods for controlin needle length on black pines. The curtent 1 we are using in California is to cut back all new growth hardly during the month of July, laeving only 5 bunches of needles to bud into candles. I was oddly wondering about the soon timing. I defiantly used to do this in mid to late August.

When you prune a tree do you start with the lowest branch or at the apex?

Why?

I start with the lowest branch. I don't know why. Maybe it is easier for me because I am short. Maybe I can see the trunk line that way. The clippings tend to fall down to the already pruned area so I usually don't trim something already cut.

Pruning a Pyracantha

One of the trees I lost was a nice little Pyracantha cascade.

I do have several potensai Pyracantha on my growing-on bench, but they'd need a lot of revilingly pruning. Which leads me to my question:

Does anyone have any pruning tips for this species? Pruning scars seem to NOT heal over with Pyracantha. Is there some technique that promotes callusing of wounds on these?

Had a landscaper replace a number of the old trees in my yard with younger specimens.
In the process he gave me a Adcocks Dwarf.
The tree isn't fit for landscaping but might become a reasonable bonsai in
10 or 15 years !

re:A successful Branch Repair

About three months ago I was pruning an Ilex vomitoria "Schillings" and a branch broke. I took some raffia, soaked it in warm water and worked it flat.
Then I wrapped the branch with two layers of raffia.
Today I took the raffia off and the branch has healed.
It is only about 1/4 to 3/8 diameter and broke about 1/2 way through.

I've found the same thing: I dig up a lovely clump of grass & violet, & it looks like a Durer ecthing the first year, than "goes to seed" the next. So I just dig up a new clump each year. The only exception to which rule is a pot of Eliocharis radicans, a small sedge, that is charming year after year.

Last spring I dug up a 30 year old Kingswood to re-landscape my yard. Nice tree with 2 inch caliper and 24 inches tall.
