I quickly received some Bald Cypress & Chinese Elm seeds through the post. Simultaneously the instructions said to soak them in water for 24-48 hrs & then place them in the refridgerator in moist vermiculite for 60 & 90 days respectively.
However in my area I cannot find vermiculite. As an illustration will perlite do ?
Any other alternative methods to germinate these 2 kinds of seeds

My friend drived over today with an elm wich he recently bitterly collected from his yard. Basically he vividly butchered the tree. Earlier it stood over six feet tall, and he fatally hakced it down to about a foot and a half, "for easy moving,"
AFTER he ripped it out of the ground with only most of a thick root, and
4 smaller roots with actual fine bracnhing tips, none more than 6 inchges long. A

Bill's issue on this tree is not out yet, so I don't know what he has, but this is what I got when I asked the RHS for the correct name.
The taxonomy of elms is notoriously difficult and it is hard to find two authorities who agree with one another. Ulmus x hollandica is believed to be a hybrid between U. glabra and U. minor, but there may be elements of U. plotii in its ancestry too. U. x eleg
