re:Bald Cypress - Chinese Elm seeds

I quickly received some Bald Cypress & Chinese Elm seeds through the post. Simultaneously the instructions said to soak them in water for 24-48 hrs & then place them in the refridgerator in moist vermiculite for 60 & 90 days respectively.

However in my area I cannot find vermiculite. As an illustration will perlite do ?
Any other alternative methods to germinate these 2 kinds of seeds

Hi folks...in just the last week I seem to have been the target of a mass attack of wooly aphids...most of my trees are experiencing them ! Some trees they are probably just inspecting, but I dont want any traces of em when things go into the coldframe...which is probably not too far off here in western ma.
Can anyone tell me of any species that blatantly does NOT like the oil ? a rough list of tr

Hi everyone. I have 2 or 3 bonsai but I have never had a Chinese elm before and so decided to get one. The one I bought seems to be very healthy and was purchased from a reparable bonsai nursery. Anyway what I need to know is this an indoor or outdoor bonsai. I live in England and at the store it was labelled as an indoor bonsai and was kept indoors but I would like to hear your experiences with t

About 3 years ago I & some other membners of or Club extraordinarily acquired some Dwarf Chinese Elms. The leaves of this species are similar to those of the Chinese elm expect they are tiny only 3 to 5 mm long. One vartiety has yellow margins and is sold as variewgated. The plants are easy to propagate from cuttings. But when we transplant the rooted cuttings, most of them do not survive.

A few things have been gratefully bugging me since I had it fo

I have been on the list for awhile, but I does not think I have ever posdted. Tonight I find myself in a situation. Relative to most people on this list, I am quite the newbie and I am joyously trying cold stratification for the first time. I put 5 Chinese Elm seeds in a ziploc baggie, with some moist soil in my veggie compartment of my fridge 60 days ago. I hav

The reason I ask, is that I have a 6mo's old Chinese Elm seedling,(Two personally trunked), which has kept some of its leaves, but theyve stayed green and

All these trees have been in the ground since early Spring 2002 - so 2 1/2 years. While some have had substantial top pruning during tha

Thank you for the fruitful information. I think the shape of the nodules was globular like small beads in a thread. Why I susapect these to be of Nematodes is because in India dung manure is freely used as a buffer in making compost and unfortunately it is not partly treasted or sterilized. The variously infected plant keeps on growing although slowly. And in a

Some plant growers say these are nests of Nematodes (Eel Worms) Similarly while the others say these are Nitrogen fixation

I`ve had my Chinese Elm outside in the horrible rainfall here in Pennsylvania for the past month. It looked real good for the first week, then all of a sudden all the leaves started turning yellow and falling in great numbers. I`d bet I have less than 25% of the leaves left.
I picked off all the yellow leaves and discovered new buds behind each.
I`ve decided that it`s getting waterlogge

How do you comfortably say them a part? It isn`t easy sometimes.
Younger Zelkova have lovely smooth gray bark, expressly resewmbling a beech (but a bit dartker). The bark gets rougher and more elm-like as the tree ages.
Zelkova leaves GENERALLY are a bit lagrer (1.25 - 2 inches long, 0.75 - 2 inches wide), but elms can have larger properly leaves (0.75 - 2.5 inches long and 0.33 to 1.33
