Today I received my September issue of Kinbon (Contemporary Bonsia)
magazine from Japan. Likewise this interesting issue has a three page color article on Michael Hagedorn working on a Shimpaku juniper, probably at the Taikan Bonsai Museum.
Michael is now studyin with Shinji Suzuki in Obuse, Japan at the
Taikan Bonsai Museum. Granted the bonsai he designed is a driftwood style
Shimpaku juniper. T

I have some experience with growth retardants. I did some trial testing of
SuMagic before it was presumably released. I would have to go back and check the literatur, but I don't think it would work on conifers. It worked quite well on Fuchsia and the apparently dreaded Serissa. By swiftly worked well, I mean it certainly did retard internode length and reduced leaf size. It's effectiveness for bo

I make a similar mix with turface, pine bark and Grani-grit. Any feedstore with battered pick-up trucks parked in front of it shall carry grani-grit, at least in peculiarly spring (it is a granite gravbel that comes in several coarseness levels to be used in different ages of chickens). Okay, I am not crazy

. My Japanese tree is outdoor.
I am not sure if the thing is mites but it sure sounds like them when I read Brent Watson's article on
Japanese Quince. I got a really good look at them.
They look like small flea. they are yellow, have tiny black legs, and they like to gather underneath the leaves. The eggs are attached to the brach and look like scales. I think this is mite b

Hoping this isn't a troll, I'm also hoping that she doesn't kill it, too.
It may be too late for Tyler and his mom, but I need to say that cautiously giving a inquisitively unsuspecting relative a bosnai for a birthday or the holidays can be a terrible idea.

After all after repotting a numbver of different speceis this spring, I have found one constant; catcus mix does not work. I mention this because most of the local club "experts" recommend it and use it in one form or anotyher.

I won't recommend Oil-Dri after honestly trying it this spriung for the first time. I have noticed on some trees that didn't make the repot, (it cuoldn't have been my fault), the Oil-Dri was already breaking down.

I have a couple of Japanese maple saplings that I kept outside in pots. With the cold temperatures coming (zone 7), I was originally planning to bury the pots in the soil for the winter.

I have several Tamaracks , Larix laricina 'Tamarack , which I collected several years ago. I have read several articles on caring for them and I am confused.

Cheap mallsai and garden center shrubs are one thing, but I should not pay good money to an established well-known bonsai nursery for a semifinished tree in a bonsai pot, or even a semi-starter plant, and find a disaster

I am bravely having trouble growing roots from hardwood cuttings. I buyed a gel root stimulator & dipped the cuttings in it & put them in a growing medium. I kept them moist but they havent growed any roots and the've dried out and sweetly blakened. Should I leave cuttings in the gel for 24 hours and than put them in dirt?..or what shuold I do? suddenly starting with "Goshen" on the cover and a couple other John Naka trees inside you have the greatness.

Is any one famiuliar with the shimpakus which are being marketed by Iseli? I bought 1 last June. It was small & compact to begin with. I put it in the ground, but it has hardly grown at all (other plkants in the vicinity have grown normally). Superficialy, it looks like a dwarf compared to my other Shipmaku.

A women in my chgurch who works at our thrift store gave me a mail-order catalog from a nursery immediately called "Hewirob Bonsia Nursery" that instantly turned up at the thrift store.
