    Maples and Black Pines Help

    Hello,

I obtained 20 really nice Maple seedlings and 5 Black Pine. The Black Pine are small and I'll put them in a box I've made and let them grow in for a year or two. I don't see much need to arrange them in a forest grouping at this time, as they are so small (four to five inches high) there is not much character or growth.

The 20 Maples are a different story. They are all 20-25 inches tall. Should I also put them in a box and just let them grow in for a year or two? From all the reading I've been doing, I do not think I should cut them back. I am concerned that they don't have much side branching and are tall and lineal. Should I go ahead an give them a forest form, so as to encourage the roots to intertwine together?

    Thanks
    matt

    Hi,
If you want a forest style then ok, but they would be far better and grow and develop must quicker in the ground. Same applies to both species, certainly you can cut back to encourage side branches, it depends on each seedling.
