A great way to add water retention is just to mix in some potting soil. You could shread up some sphagnum moss and mix it in if you'd rather stray away from potting soil, but the simplest way is potting soil.

As for ratios that's something that you need to test to figure out, what works for me may not work for you. I like to use close to a 2/3 oildri to 1/3 soil.

Sad to see the forums still having problems, and sorry for my absence...been busy busy

    Re:Oil-Dri Testing

I actually made a 5 gallon bucket of soil tonight and in total with the bucket, it cost me 25 bux. My soil recipe im trying is as follows.
2 parts miracle grow cactus soil (fast drying, made for cactus duh! and suculants)
2 parts miracle grow organic potting soil.
    1.5 parts perlite
6 parts NAPA Oil Absorbent Diatomaceous Earth
and to top off the bucket i just poured in some bonsai soil about a small ziplock bag full that i had from last summer.

it seems to hold just the right amount moisture,

Be very careful about choosing Oil Dri. Some of them turn to mush over time and will choke roots if unattended.
I've had to dump one brand into the garden for this reason.
