Green Mountain

That's what I've named this Green Mound Juniper I bought back in Sept. of 08. It had a price tag of $450, but in a hot moment I got it for only $75. It was showing some die back due to being totally congested and I guess the nurseryman had had it far too long. In this pic it's sitting in the back of my pick-up truck and it takes up most of the bed.

We began the process of cleaning and clearing out all the dead debris. They're nasty inside, but my wife never lost that smile.

What the tree is, is a Green Mound Juniper that has been grafted to the top of a standard Juniper trunk. Here it is cleaned and clipped. It spent the winter in the pot it came in and I repotted it the following spring.

I put it in this large tub and began working the branches, removing some and cutting back others. This tree is like several bonsai all in one. Every aspect shows a different group of little trees. I working it so they all flow together as you move around the tree.

Right side. I left almost all the dead wood and alot of the branches that needed to be removed were only stripped of foliage so they can be jinned at a later time. There's a dozen or so in the interior that I'll carve onto spikes once they've died back.

Whoa. When I looked at the first pic, I was like "Holy Crap!" So...what kind of style do you have in mind for this giant? The branch-trunk relationship is really weird, kind of like an umbrella...Would air-layering be an option? that trunk is awfully straight:S Good luck anyways!:silly:

Post edited by: BonsaiChris, at: 2010/03/06 23:45

Well Chris, this one is definitly in the, ' and other,' catagory as far as styles go. It's one of those, it is what it is trees and if you want to call it a bonsai, go ahead. I want to, and I do. I've actually seen trees like this out in the wild above the snow line. It happens when a tree gets snapped off and the low lives limbs grow out and get bent down by the snow. There's lots of shari and I'm going to jin all the interior branches. Not all trees will fit into one style or the other. This is a man-made tree and you're not supposed to be able to see the trunk in its intended form. I don't think there's anything I can do with it except to enjoy it.

I read and heard by far a Master in Bonsai and in his blog. I'm speaking of Walter Paul that he doesn't make his trees look like bonsai it is by far the other way around make your bonsai look like a real tree.
