Forum Orange Trees - 2007/12/15 09:54
I had started some orange trees about 6 months ago, and before they start to harden I want to start to train them, I will post some photos soon, I am going to let this forum let me know how they would like them styled, I am going to make them the forum trees, there are 4 trees that are going to be used for this forum, so get thinking and let me know what you want them to look like.

Heyyyyyyyy what an excellent idea - and it could work out so surprisingly for you Mike I can't wait to see the photos.
I am also going to follow your 'orders' from last year in where you described how I can plant seeds from orange pits in vermiculites (still haven't found that) because the orange season has started here again so I can get my hands easily on those pits.

Here are the photos to pick from, let me know how you want them to look, if you want post photos or make drawings of what you want them to look like, have fun try not to take up to much time the trunks are starting to harden soon they will not bend, I will number them so I will know what tree you are talking about. ---------

Number 2 was made into a Literati Style, so this one can not be picked any more, you can see it on page 2.

Number 2 looks like a good 'candidate'
Now let me think
give a hint ?
or maybe, not only I will give suggestions, but others join in as well, DrSmith seems like he knows what he is talking about as well

People look but no one seems to want to add any thing so I started, this one is not one of the 4 trees, it is now the fith tree I have added, so I did a Informal Upright, ok now who is next here is a link if you don't know what styles there are to pick from. http://www.brusselsbonsai.com/BonsaiStyles.html

Pity With more input it would become real intersting. I would opt for the literati style (from your link, Mike) Is that a complex one to achieve?

Indeed, I'm a mere beginner although I could ask the robot (below) to search his sensors! Just kidding. I agree a formal upright would be nice for one of the trees. Maybe Mickey can bend the trunk into an "S" shape or something with strong wire before he wires the branches. It would help if we could see what a full grown orange tree looks like in the wild and then decide if we want the bonsai to reflect a natural image or be more bizarre. But never fear, Smith is here!

Mickey, are these plants easy to keep indoors or do you need flourescent lights?

Yes it is easy to grow from seed, just get an orange with seeds, take out seeds and plant them, I do use flourescent lights but you do not need to, you can use the sun light. ---------

It takes the seeds one and a haff months to open, then if you feed them once every two weeks, in 4 months you should have about a one and a haff foot tree, the growing slows in about the sixth month. ---------

Yeah, literati seems O.K. by me. Hey, do apple trees grow in the same way as orange trees and what about plumb trees or pear trees? Can these be grown from the fruit too?

wow that is really cool! does the fruit shrink at all when they start to bare fruit?
the pear idea sounds wicked...I love pears, so the idea of a mini pear tree is most appealing.

No they do not grow the same way, they need to be stratified before they can grow, a pear seed it like a apple seed the need to be done the same way, same as plumb seeds, stratified in the refrigerator for 2 months before spring here is a link to help you out. Orange trees can grow inside your house, apple, pear and plumb grow out side they need cold winters to remane living, and yes you can use the seed from the fruit. http://gardenline.usask.ca/misc/seed_str.html
