Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/05 08:05 Hi, I have bought seeds from Canada in the mail. The package consisted of Japanese Black Pine's, Red Maples, and Needle Junipers.
I have followed the stratification process given to me by the supplier. All of them were planted as indicated and the following sprouted..
2 of the 4 Black pines planted came up and about 2months after that something els came up, with the seeds shell on top of the seedling.
I don't know if I am going to be able to upload the picture of the seedling, but I will try. It came up in the area where I planted the Red Maple
But does not look like a Maple to me. Please Identify this please...?

Then I would like to know, its been 7 months and my Needle Junipers have not sprouted yet. Why? They are planted close to my other Bonsai's(7year old Acacia Burkei, the two Black Pine seedlings and a 10year old Ficus) which
Is in my bedroom very close to the window, for sunlight and is watered every day depending on the wetness of the soil. I also give all my bonsai fertilizer
Every 3rd week. I live in South Africa.

Herewith attached is the picture of the unknown specimen..

Re:Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/05 17:21 Hi Jakes, I've read that juniper seeds can take 5 yrs or more to sprout, so get your patience on, you're in for a long haul. The sprout does'nt look like anything you mention and may be a stray seed that got in the mix you bought, or a native seed that got into your soil. The first pic looks somewhat like a birch or poplar sprout, but then the second looks more like a flower or weed of some kind. Do you see anything like it out in the neighborhood?

Re:Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/05 17:33 My vote is for weed, but I wouldn't give up on it yet. See if it will develop a woody stem and take it from there. Possibly after it gets some more growth it will be more identifiable.
For now I would pinch off the highest leaf down to just above the first node. This will cause it to strengthen the stem/trunk and if you keep pinching it back it will develop a more upright style, rather than the leggy look it looks like it's developing currently.
...........and keep us posted.

Re:Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/05 20:10 It looks like a mulberry to me. They grow like weeds in Joburg, and I shouldn't think its any different in Pretoria. They can make decent bonsai so see what develops.

Re:Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/08 07:23 Thank you all for the reply's. I will be patient and see what happens or what developes. So it lookes like, my mapels also have a problem in sprouting then..?? How long should I wait for the maples? Also 5 years.. I think I should rather next time buy seedlings instead of seeds.. Where can I order or buy seedlings like Needle Junipers and Japanese Red Maples??

Thanks again for the reply!

Re:Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/08 07:30 Yes Gina, I think your right, it does look like a mulberry. I think I will let it grow in any case, since the fruit of a mulberry can be eaten and enjoyed by all the colour.

Re:Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/08 09:15 One of the nice things about Mulberry as a bonsai is that the fruit are small, so your bonsai will look good as the fruit start to ripen.

Re:Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/08 21:51 Maple seeds have this built in protection that keeps them from sprouting on the first warm day in spring. In nature they get exposed to off and on hot and cold, and normally sprout only after the days are consistantly warm, May or June here in Oregon and in July I'll go out looking for seedlings to gather. If you've done this to your seeds and they're not sprouting, you might try a heating pad under the pots to warm the soil.

Re:Identify my seedling please?? - 2010/02/09 08:21 My maple seeds, needle juniper seeds and black pine seedlings are all in the same windowsill pot. Will the heating pad be bad for the other seeds and seedlings??

Attached is the pot with the seedlings. Its a long pot about 60cm in length and 20cm in width and 15cm deep.
