Newbie trying to start out - 2008/06/24 08:29 I'm brand new to bonsai and am very interested. I live in an apt, so I have to do it indoors. I live in Indiana and only have North facing windows. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good species to start out with? I really like the way that black and white pines look, but from what I have read they do not do well indoors. Is that true? Any advice that I could get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, i hope we can help.....

Yes all pines and junipers need the out doors and winter or they will die, what you mite want is a ficus, they are a indoor tree hard to kill, easy to take care of and look grate as a bonsai, you can use a florescent light if you do not have sun also they do very well in low lighting, here is a photo of one. and a link to some info about them you can look at. http://www.bonsaiweb.com/care/faq/ficus.html

Re:Newbie trying to start out - 2008/06/26 07:20 Thanks Mike. After doing some more research, I've decided going with Bodhi (ficus religiosa). I bought some seeds from ebay. Probably not the best place to get them, nor is it all that bright to try to grow from a seed the first time, but oh well. That's what makes life interesting. That said. Does anyone have any advice or know of any websites for growing this tree from a seed? I've have searched for hours and have not been able to find anything usable on the net. Any knowledge that anyone could pass on to me would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You are going to have some fun. you need a container with a clear top and you need a florescent light, use a good soil something like a Michigan peat, or a rich soil do not put holes in the container for drainage keep the top on the container at all times, you want to layer the soil put down some soil, get it really wet, then add soil on top of it, this soil you want damp, put your seeds on top of the soil do not put under the soil only on top cover the container with a clear lid and put the light over it about 2 or 3 inches from the top, what you want to make it a small rain forest if water forums to the in side top of the lid you did something right, do not open it give it about one month to two months for seeds to start growing, do not re-pot until they have about 4 leaves on the small plant, they will start out looking like small weeds then grow into ficus. i will put up a photo of some of mine for you to see.

Re:Newbie trying to start out - 2008/06/27 03:18 Thanks for the great info. Just two more questions (for now). Do I keep the light on all the time for those first few months or should I do like 12-16 hrs on and the rest off? Also I found some info on a site called Bonsai4Me.com (http://www.bonsai4me.com/Basics/Basics%20LearningToWalk.htm). Do you know if this is good info or BS? Thanks so much for all your help!

Re:Newbie trying to start out - 2008/06/27 22:29 "use a good soil something like a Michigan peat, or a rich soil"

Would MG Organic Potting mix work for this? I have looked all over my city and I have not been able to find Michigan Peat. I'm assuming that this is a type of soil mixture?

Re:Newbie trying to start out - 2008/06/27 23:32 Yes it will work, Michigan Peat is just Peat, but comes from Michigan. peat is something that comes from dried up swamps or bogs, it is cleaned and sold in bags.
